Time to be adjustedone hour forward on the night of the 29th of March

In order to benefit more from daylight, the annual adjustment of time (summer time) for one hour forward throughout the country will take place at 03.00 o’clock on Sunday, the 29th of March.

The decision of the Cabinet of Ministers in this regard has been published in the Official Gazette. On the basis of this decision, the time would be set one hour forward throughout the country at 03.00 hours on Sunday, the 29h of March, where local elections will also be held. On Sunday, the 25th of October, 2009, the time would be adjusted for one hour backwards at 04.00 hours.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet of Ministers on the 2nd of March, 2009, in line with the article in Law No. 697 on “Division of a Day to 24 Hours” and the written notification of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, dated the 17th of February, 2009.

Summer time is observed for the purpose of benefiting more from daylight and economizing on the use electricity for illumination, by ensuring that working hours fall on the sun-lit period of the day. Furthermore, by the application of summer time, it is intended to lower the demand for energy (timekeeping) which is at highest level during the evening hours.

As in previous years, the summer time starts on the last Sunday of the month of March and ends on the last Sunday of the month of October, similar to practice in the countries of the European Union.

With the observance of summer time, the amount of energy saved corresponds to the annual production of a “middle-sized” hydroelectric power plant. To put the time one hour forward is a primary factor in beginning and ending the working hours early, as well as in illumination, heating up and cooling off.

According to calculations of TEIAS, with the practice of summer time, 500-600 million kWh is saved annually.
